SWRC 2018 SUMMER LINE UP

I volunteer with the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council. Here is their summer line up.

I'll be doing the Bokashi Workshop on August 11.

1. Harvesting and Using Finished Compost
When: 6:00 pm Wednesday, May 16th
Where: The Garden Patch (900 block of 3 Ave N, entrance on Duchess St)
Facebook event here.

Compost is a great thing to add to your garden soil, but knowing when it is ready takes a little practice. At our first spring workshop, we will be digging in to a compost pile to find the finished compost, separate it out, screen it and use it.

2. The Story of Soil: how soil biology supports life on Earth
When: 6:00 pm Thursday, May 24th
Where: The Garden Patch (900 block of 3 Ave N, entrance on Duchess St)

Have you ever wondered what’s going on under the surface of the soil? There’s a whole world of creatures living just beneath our feet – and we couldn’t get by without them. As part of Saskatoon's NatureCity Festival, we will be learning about soil biology and how we can support it.

3. Composting 101
When: 6:00 pm Wednesday, June 13th
Where: The Garden Patch (900 block of 3 Ave N, entrance on Duchess St)

The perfect introduction to composting. At our third workshop we will be learning about how to start a basic backyard compost that breaks down quickly and without bad smells.

4. Hot Composting
When: 1:00 pm Saturday, June 23rd
Where: The Garden Patch (900 block of 3 Ave N, entrance on Duchess St)

A more advanced workshop for folks interested in making banner batches of fast compost that break down at hot temperatures. Hot compost breaks down more quickly than cool compost and can kill weed seeds.

5. Composting Indoors with Earthworms
When: 6:00 pm Wednesday, July 4th
Where: The Garden Patch (900 block of 3 Ave N, entrance on Duchess St)

Composting isn't just for backyards. With red wiggler earthworms, anyone can make great compost indoors out of kitchen scraps. The worm compost or "castings" is excellent for houseplants.

6. Intro to Composting
When: 6:00 pm Wednesday, July 18th
Where: The Askîy Garden (Lot 1202, 19th St W, corner of Ave K and 19th St)

Back by popular demand, we will be putting on a second introduction to composting workshop at the Askîy Garden. We will be learning about how to start a basic backyard compost that breaks down quickly and without bad smells.

7. Composting Meat and Bones with Bokashi
When: 1:00 pm Saturday, August 11th
Where: The Garden Patch (900 block of 3 Ave N, entrance on Duchess St)

Did you know there is a kind of composting that can deal with tougher food wastes like meat, bones, dairy, and cooked food? Bokashi composting is a two-step process that starts by doing a controlled ferment of food waste in a sealed container.

8. Easy Finished Compost
When: 6:00 pm Tuesday, August 21st
Where: The Askîy Garden (Lot 1202, 19th St W, corner of Ave K and 19th St)

At our final workshop of the summer, we will try again to find the finished compost in a compost bin, separate it out, screen it and use it.
